Many people are opting to forgo traditional wood burning fireplaces with cleaner gas burning ones on the idea they are “maintenance free”. Yes, you don’t have the messy wood piles, and ash to clean out after every use, but there are some key maintenance protocols you should follow to ensure your safety and the longevity of your fireplace.
Here’s our gas stove maintenance checklist:
- Inspect and clean the glass front. Most gas fireplace doors are removable – check with your manufacturer to understand how yours is constructed. Make sure your glass is cool and remove the glass – put it on some plastic or old newspaper to protect your floor or table. Inspect it for any cracks in the glass or wear on the gasket as even the smallest imperfection warrants a replacement. If you are using a window cleaner make sure you wait at least 30 minutes to use your stove after you put the glass back on
- Inspect & clean the inside about once a month. You can use a vacuum cleaner to get out dust and debris. While cleaning look for any cracks, rust, corrosion in the firebox – the actual “logs” require little cleaning or maintenance and should never be subject to water a simple dusting is all they need.
- Check your outside vent – make sure it’s clear of debris just like you would your dryer vent.
- Check your burner ignition and replace batteries twice a year – same time you do your smoke detectors!
- Check your Carbon Monoxide detector. We suggest a monthly check to ensure it’s working.
- Have your fireplace & chimney inspected Note a vent free fireplace will have no “chimney” but you should still have the fireplace inspected.
The above is a handy DIY checklist but it’s important to include an annual inspection by a certified technician to ensure you unit is working correctly. During the maintenance, technicians will not only clean the unit, but they will also check for any gas and/or carbon monoxide leaks.
