With the recent spike in oil prices not only here in Connecticut, but throughout the nation we thought it was the perfect time to share how to best conserve on oil usage. Following are some tried and true tips. As always, if you have any questions don’t hesitate to reach out to our professional team at Baribault Fuel for help and answers!
Conserve on oil usage with these steps:
Seal the Drafts
Although it’s spring – that doesn’t mean we are out of the woods with chilly and sub-freezing weather. If you didn’t seal drafty older windows with film, you can still do that. Kits are available at most hardware stores. Also make sure you have weather stripping around doors to ensure a tight seal.
Turn your heat down at night
Grab some extra blankets because sleeping in cooler weather is better for you! Turning your heat down at least 60 degrees at night not only helps you conserve oil, but will enhance your sleep experience. Turn it back up in the morning or consider purchasing a thermostat with a timer!
Be consistent with furnace maintenance
Just like your car and your body – proper maintenance is important! Annual checkups and tune-ups will make your furnace more efficient – using less oil than furnaces that aren’t up to snuff. Call 860.274.3284 and schedule your appointment today.
Make sure your vents/radiators are free of obstructions
We see it often, vents and radiators covered by rugs, furniture, or “stuff” all of which prevent optimized air and heat flow. This fix is one of the easiest ways to help your oil bill! Do an inventory and inspection of each room. For forced air systems – make sure vents are clear and unclogged and air is flowing easily from them. For boiler systems ensure radiators have space to “radiate” the heat.
Check your thermostat
Older thermostats may not be communicating correctly with your system. What you see as 65 degrees may actually be 70! Making a simple inexpensive switch to an upgraded thermostat can save you fuel dollars in the long term.
Check duct work in forced air systems
Just like checking for air leaks around windows, you should do an annual inspection of your duct work that delivers your heat and the cooler air of you’re A/C! Cracks and leaks can happen letting precious warm (or cool) air out.
