Propane Safety Tips from Baribault Fuel

There’s a reason Connecticut cooks prefer propane– it’s efficient, runs clean, burns better and hotter and in most cases is more affordable than its counterpart electricity. And with our weather – the ability to use your stove when there is a power outage is a huge plus!

With all the perks of using propane for cooking, it’s wise to note that propane is a flammable gas and can be dangerous if not handled properly.

Our Baribault Propane Experts compiled a list of safety tips:

  1. Don’t use your outdoor propane appliances such as grills, generators or heaters INSIDE or in enclosed areas. All of these devices will emit carbon monoxide when in use which can cause carbon monoxide poisoning and even death for people and pets.  ONLY use them outside where there is sufficient ventilation
  2. Don’t store propane tanks INSIDE – that includes garages, basements or even an outdoor shed. The tanks are meant to be outside and are perfectly fine in adverse weather conditions.
  3. DIY on tanks or propane appliances is a NO-NO! Unless you are a trained propane expert – never, ever try to repair a regulator or a valve or any appliances that require gas. Call in the experts.
  4. If you smell gas – that’s a warning. If you smell it in the house, or your CO Detector is going off – get out of the house ASAP and don’t forget your pets.  Call 911 and Baribault Fuel at 860-274-3284   There may be a leak that needs to be addressed.
  5. Don’t store combustible items near your tank. For obvious reasons, you want to keep anything that is combustible away from your tanks – especially during times of drought, high winds or anything that could spread a fire close to your propane tank
