What Happens if I Run Out of Propane for My Home?

Although it’s never a good idea to let your propane tank hit the empty line, we understand that sometimes life happens.  Beyond having an interruption in your heating service during the cold winter months, letting your propane tank run out of gas can create some safety issues.

Here’s what happens when you run out of propane:

  1. Pilot lights in your appliances will go out and need to be properly relit once you get your tank filled – this can be dangerous if you don’t know what you are doing.
  1. If you run out of propane and a valve or gas line is left open – leaks can occur when the system is rebooted and can be very dangerous.
  2. When you run out of propane, air and moisture enters the empty tank and will create rust buildup – the part that’s dangerous is that rust and musky smells can mask the smell of the propane so you won’t detect future leaks.
  3. Most “Out of Gas” calls requires the homeowner to pay for a qualified technician to perform a leak test to meet federal code requirements for propane use. We will do this when we come to relight your furnace.
