After a crazy Summer of heat waves and 90+ degree weather, the last thing on most people’s minds is thinking about turning on the heat. But it should be. We’ve mentioned a few times in past articles and on social media, that the Summer is actually a great time to be thinking about your heating system? Why, because you aren’t using it! Now is a great time to get some of the things you’ve been putting off out of the way so you can enjoy a more comfortable home and lower bills this Fall and Winter.
While you’re waiting for the cool Fall days to set in, here are three things you can do for your heating system in the meantime:
Get a tune-up – During the warmer months, when your heating system isn’t running nonstop, is the best and most convenient time for your heating fuel company to send a qualified HVAC technician to your home to make sure your system is running in tip top shape. Once those cool nights set it, your fuel supplier will start to get quite busy.
Another great advantage to getting your routine maintenance done now is that you have a little bit of time to have repairs done. If your system needs parts that have to be ordered or your technician needs a few days to make the needed repairs, you and your family won’t be inconvenienced or left shivering in the cold. Most importantly, if you decide that you need to replace your system, you’ll be able to get it done before Late Fall/Winter.
Do the repairs you’ve been putting off. – Although we didn’t have a ton of snow last Winter, we did endure some really cold temperatures. Your system may have gotten you through the season, but if you noticed it didn’t heat quite as well, or some zones struggled a little more than others, it might be time to replace some parts.
Some repairs you may need to fix could be obvious fuel leaks, broken parts, or significant duct leaks, to name a few. These aren’t covered under your normal system tune up and would require additional repairs to keep your system running in optimum shape for Winter. Putting these off could result in some emergency repairs once your system becomes in demand.
Time to upgrade – If you’ve been on the fence about upgrading your system, now is the time to pull the trigger before you fire up your system and it doesn’t work – PS – check these things first. Service technicians have more time, your system isn’t in use, and you and your family won’t be huddled under blankets trying to stay warm.
If your heating system has seen better days, upgrading to a more efficient unit could even save you as much as 30 percent on your monthly bills. So not only will it eventually pay for itself, but you’ll also have a new system with a warranty.
